The website address for the City of Indianapolis and Marion County will change from Indygov.org to Indy.gov beginning immediately, Mayor Bart Peterson and the Information Services Agency announced today. Residents will be able to access the website at either address.
"More city services are offered online now than ever before, saving our residents and customers time and taxpayer dollars," Mayor Peterson said. "This change will help city leaders continue this progress and adapt to the changing face of business and government in the future. The shorter the domain name, the easier it will be to access and promote."
The "dot-gov" domain is managed by the federal government and generally must be used with a full city and state name designation (e.g.,
www.indianapolis-in.gov). The city, with the assistance of the local Congressional delegation, petitioned to use the nickname "Indy" and put it in line with other civic organizations - such as
indy.org (Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association),
indyarts.org (Arts Council of Indianapolis),
indydt.com (Indianapolis Downtown Inc.) and others.
In addition, the city has been developing a new neighborhood gateway website, "My Neighborhood," which will allow residents to obtain as much information about their neighborhood as possible. All types of information - schools, parks, sidewalks projects, capital projects, fire stations, libraries, community centers, churches - will be a click away by entering your address or neighborhood.
My Neighborhood, which has been under development for the past year, will be launched early next year and will be available at
Indy.gov .
